Autonomic dysreflexia is a potentially dangerous, and in rare cases, lethal clinical syndrome that develops in individual spinal cord injuries, resulting in acute, uncontrolled hypertension. All caregivers, practitioners and therapists who support an individual living with a spinal cord injury must be aware of this syndrome, recognise the symptoms and understand the causes and treatment.

Understanding Spinal Cord Injury

This publication helps the reader to understand the anatomy of a spinal cord injury (SCI). SCI occurs when there is any damage to the spinal cord that blocks communication between the brain and the body and  can occur at different levels of the spinal cord. When a SCI occurs, sensation and movement may be interrupted, resulting in a temporary or permanent loss of function, paralysis and loss of sensation.

Know your Rights is a well researched and simply presented manual which informs specific areas of legislation which may be applicable to individuals living with physical disability. This publication explains the laws and policies which give rights to people living with disability, as well as mechanisms for enforcing those rights. This publication is written simply with examples so one does not have to be a legal expert to understand and make use of the information.

This assistive device guide details the process of assessment and issuing assistive devices for people with spinal cord injury. The publication outlines the general types of assistive devices available on the market, and is a helpful document to understand what quadriplegics and paraplegics can do to receive assistive devices and mobility aids.

Care Attendant Training Brochure

The QuadPara Association of South Africa’s Care Attendant Training program was initiated in response to the critical need for a comprehensive and holistic training program for care attendants of Paraplegics and Quadriplegics.
